Will I Need A Bone Graft?

The only sure way to know if you will need a bone graft is to visit a complimentary consultation with Dr. Mark Sowell a cosmetic and restorative dentist of Plano, TX.  Dr. Sowell provides personalized and comprehensive advanced dentistry addressing the structural causes of oral health problems to help patients build stable, functional bites and beautiful smiles.

Bone Grafting FAQs

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that can allow patients to restore their oral health and their smiles. Dr. Sowell is a highly trained dentist who provides comprehensive dental care to patients in need of full mouth restorations.  Bone grafting allows patients with complex oral health concerns to regain their confidence and health.  A bone graft can support a dental implant or implant secure denture for a natural looking and functional bite and smile.

What is a bone graft?

Bone grafts use healthy tissue harvested from a donor or area of their own body. The healthy tissue is used to rebuild the natural shape and support to an area where the bone structure has been compromised.  In dentistry, bone grafts are most commonly used for patients with missing teeth.

Why would I need a bone graft?

You may require a bone graft if you have has missing teeth for a prolonged period of time. Patients who have left missing teeth untreated may experience facial regression due to bone loss. Without the structural support of the tooth and tooth root, the bone tissue begins to deteriorate.  If a patient does not have enough healthy, stable bone tissue to support a dental implant, a bone graft may be required.

Where will the bone be taken from for my bone graft?

The exact site of bone extraction will vary and will be determined by you and your dentist on an individual basis. There are two type of bone grafting, autograft, and allograft.  Autograft uses tissues from the patient’s own body and uses their own cells. Allograft uses a donor’s tissue. There are advantages and risks to both procedures. Dr. Sowell will discuss the pros of both options with you at your consultation so you are fully informed of your treatment options.
