Gummy Smile

Aesthetic Dentistry Centre Treats Gummy Smiles

If your gum line is prominent when you smile, you have a gummy smile, also known as an excessive gingival display. Some patients with a gummy smile may want to show more of their teeth. There are now a wide array of treatment options available for patients to fix their gummy smiles. Dr. Mark Sowell at Aesthetic Dentistry Centre provides gummy smile treatments to his patients in Plano, TX. He helps patients improve the cosmetic look of their smiles so they can feel more comfortable and confident.

Why Do I Have a Gummy Smile?

There are several reasons why you may have a gummy smile:

  • Jaw bone alignment: If your jaw bone extends further out than it should, it can cause the gums to look longer.
  • Lip muscles: Sometimes overactive upper lip muscles can pull your lip up too high. This shows more of the gums underneath the lip.
  • Tooth development: Although your teeth may be a normal length, they may not extend far enough past the gum line.

Treating A Gummy Smile

Dr. Sowell offers different types of treatments for a gummy smile:

  • Crown Lengthening: During this surgical treatment, we remove excess gum tissue and bone. This allows the gums to retract and reveal more of the tooth structure. A crown lengthening treatment may also be performed for patients who do not have fully erupted teeth.
  • Laser Gum Contouring: Using a dental laser, we can remove excess gum tissue. Dental lasers offer multiple benefits including minimal bleeding, a quick healing time, and natural-looking end results.
  • Gum Lift: Also known as a gingivectomy, a gum lift is a cosmetic procedure that uses dental lasers to remove excess gum tissue from multiple teeth. Using advanced dental lasers, we gently remove gum tissue while reshaping the gum line. This treatment gently pushes the gum tissue back to reveal more of the dental structure.
