Dr. Sowell can address your dental concerns and offer solutions to help improve your oral health. Halitosis Treatment Options

Halitosis can be caused by a range of dental issues. If you aren’t properly taking care of your teeth, it can lead to the development of complex dental problems. It is important to brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day to eliminate any harmful bacteria that may be contributing to your halitosis. Dr. Sowell can work with you to develop the right treatment plan for your smile. To provide the right solution, Dr. Sowell will need to determine the underlying cause of your halitosis. Halitosis can be caused by:

  • Infection: Sickness can cause postnasal drip to occur in the throat and affect the way your breath smells. Infections are usually temporary and can be treated by proper medication.
  • Gum Disease: Gum disease is an infection of the gum tissue, which can lead to tooth loss, shifting teeth, infection, and persistent bad breath. Dr. Sowell will perform a comprehensive exam to determine if you have gum disease. If you do have gum disease, we offer periodontal therapy to help restore the health of your teeth. It is important to floss and brush regularly to help minimize your chance of developing gum disease.
  • Tooth Decay: When plaque is not properly removed, it can lead to tooth decay. Tooth decay breaks down the enamel of your tooth over time which can cause a toothache,  tooth sensitivity, tooth loss, and foul breath. Tooth decay is preventable with proper oral hygiene.
  • Dry Mouth: Dry mouth happens when there is a lack of saliva in the mouth. Saliva helps circulate debris and minimize the chance of harmful bacteria from sticking to the teeth. Dry mouth can be caused by factors like dehydration, medication, and tobacco use.

Once Dr. Sowell determines the cause of halitosis, he can offer personalized treatment to help restore your healthy smile.
