Many people must cope with the effects of chronic snoring. This is more than just an annoyance, however, snoring is a common symptom of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Many patients with sleep apnea use a CPAP machine, but Dr. Mark Sowell of Aesthetic Dentistry Centre, a dental practice in Plano, TX, offers oral appliances.
Learn about the answers to many common questions about sleep apnea:
One of the most common risk factors when it comes to obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, is obesity or excess weight. Sleep apnea is also observed more frequently among men than women. Some sleep positions can also obstruct the airway as the muscles relax during sleep. These positions may allow the tissue to collapse over the airway, restricting airflow. Due to this lack of airflow, the sleeper often awakes multiple times, feels tired or falls asleep during the day, and may have memory and concentration issues.
Both CPAP therapy and oral appliances keep the airway open during sleep, but there are several key differences. CPAP machines deliver air from a machine and through a face mask. Oral appliances are custom-fit to the patient’s teeth to keep the airway open. Similar to mouthguards, oral appliances gently move the lower jaw forward and prevent the soft tissues in the mouth from blocking the airway.
Dr. Sowell meets with patients for an individual consultation to examine the mouth and make sure the oral appliance fits correctly. These devices do usually reposition the jaw, but they’re also designed to reduce snoring and lead to better sleep.
Dr. Sowell provides snoring appliances, stop-snoring mouthpieces, and mandibular advancement devices. He provides routine checks for patients who choose sleep apnea appliances and can make adjustments when necessary.
