5 Tips From Your Family Dentist for Back to School Season

As summer ends and the school year begins, it can be easy for patients to forget about their oral health. Dr. Mark Sowell and his team at Aesthetic Dentistry Centre provide family dentistry services in Plano, TX. They want to make the transition to the back-to-school season easier for their patients. Below you can read tips about how you can keep up with your children’s oral health as well as your own this fall.

5 Back-to-School Oral Health Tips

1. Schedule dental appointments for you and your family

To better remember dental checkups, schedule them at the same time every year. Dental appointment slots can fill quickly, so make appointments before after-school activities get in the way!

2. Pack low-sugar items in school lunches

It can be stressful to choose the right foods for your children every day. It’s easy to want to throw in snack-sized treats on busy mornings, but planning ahead and pre-packing healthy, low-sugar items can help protect your kids’ teeth from tooth decay. There are some tasty, low-sugar snacks that are worth the extra shopping time to find and buy.

3. Take time for tooth brushing

Kids thrive on routine, and establishing a regular routine will help them maintain their oral health. We recommend that both children and adults brush and floss twice a day in the morning and before bedtime.

4. Let kids choose their toothpaste and toothbrush

Allowing kids to choose their own dental products helps them look forward to brushing and flossing. It also makes it easier for them to maintain their oral health. Look for an ADA-approved seal on their toothpaste and toothbrush when you go shopping.

5. Know what to do in a dental emergency

We know that accidents can happen. Knowing what to do in the event of a dental emergency can prevent dental injuries and even tooth loss. Please contact our dental office if your child chips or breaks a tooth. If your child knocks out a permanent tooth, transport it to our office in a cup of cold milk. We can sometimes reattach the tooth if it is preserved.
