How Does Cosmetic Dental Bonding Work?

Are your teeth chipped and dented, making you feel self-conscious about smiling? Maybe you’re hesitant about undergoing expensive and complex dental procedures to freshen them up? Cosmetic dental bonding is a relatively simple treatment that can resolve multiple dental issues at one time that might otherwise need several different procedures to address.

Dr. Mark Sowell of Aesthetic Dentistry Centre, your Plano, TX dental provider, would like to educate you about how this relatively inexpensive and increasingly popular cosmetic dentistry treatment can help you smile confidently again.

What is cosmetic dental bonding?

Dental bonding is a cosmetic treatment that repairs visible damage and defects in your tooth enamel. Dr. Sowell fills in these imperfections using composite resin, a soft, plastic-based material.  Composite resin is similar to the spackle you may have used in home repairs but for dental restoration. It can be shaped to fill in any kind of indentation and is available in various shades to match the different colors and shades of your tooth enamel. For this reason composite resin is ideal for treating an assortment of cosmetic dental issues. Once the resin hardens, bonding to your tooth enamel, it will not only look like but also be as strong as your actual tooth enamel.

What are the signs dental bonding may be necessary?

Chips and dents in tooth enamel, even small ones, can be quite noticeable and make you feel self-conscious about smiling, talking and eating in public. But composite resin can be used to fill in these chips and dents while also covering any roots that may have been exposed roots due to receding gums. You may have found your teeth to be extra sensitive to hot and cold foods and beverages without this extra layer of tissue, which can make eating painful. Covering the exposed roots with composite resin can eliminate this sensitivity while also protecting your roots from infection.

Maybe you have one oddly shaped tooth that doesn’t look like the others? Sometimes a tooth can be discolored, twisted, crooked, short or misshapen but still be healthy and strong otherwise. Composite resin can be used to alter the appearance and color of the tooth, giving your smile a more uniform appearance.

Cosmetic bonding is also a good option for reducing small gaps between your teeth. These unattractive gaps can trap food, increasing your risk of tooth decay, as well as being unsightly. Cosmetic bonding is a relatively simple and affordable way to eliminate those spaces for a more confident and healthy smile.

Although composite bonding won’t necessarily last as long as other cosmetic treatments such as dental veneers, you should be able to enjoy the benefits of the procedure for up to 10 years if you care for them properly. You should avoid chewing hard candy, ice cubes and other hard or sticky food that can crack the composite resin that has restored your teeth.
