Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) may be caused by stress and injury to the joints that connect the skull and jaw bone. The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) affect the health of the teeth, face, and jaw. Over time, patients with TMD can experience tooth and jaw pain as well as enamel wear. Dr. Mark Sowell and his dental team offer TMJ treatment to patients in Plano, TX.

The most common signs of TMJ disorders include:
Contact our office if you have noticed any of these symptoms. We will help you find the right treatment for your needs, whether it’s physical therapy, a soft diet, or a nightguard.
Hard and chewy foods, stress, and caffeine can often trigger symptoms of TMD. If people are under stress, they can clench and grind their teeth unconsciously, even at night. Foods that are more difficult to eat, like chips, bread, and hard candy can cause jaw popping and clicking. Eating these foods can also cause pain in the face and jaw because they put additional stress and pressure on the jaw and facial muscles. Finally, caffeine affects the nervous system and makes patients more anxious, which contributes to muscle pain.
We offer nightguards that are custom-made using dental impressions. These nightguards protect the teeth from further wear and stop patients from clenching and grinding their teeth. Wearing an oral appliance also alleviates jaw pressure and corrects the jaw position. Patients who wake up with tooth pain or headaches due to TMD can feel comfortable when wearing a nightguard.
Minor forms of TMD may be able to go away on their own. However, if you have chronic headaches, tooth sensitivity, and jaw pain, call our office. Physical therapy, nightguards, and a soft diet can help reverse the damage done by TMJ disorders.
Sometimes, patients can experience worsening symptoms for several hours or even days. If left untreated, TMJ disorders can become chronic. Stick to a diet of soft foods and take pain medications to alleviate jaw or tooth pain. Contact us for treatment if you have not received a nightguard. We can also recommend physical therapy to TMJ patients.
