Causes of Tooth Sensitivity in Plano, TX

Common causes of tooth pain and sensitivity include:

Aggressive Tooth Brushing

If you brush your teeth aggressively or use a hard-bristled toothbrush, you can wear your tooth enamel. Weakened or worn tooth enamel can expose the dentin, or underlayer, which often leads to tooth sensitivity. Gently brush or floss your teeth and use a soft-bristled toothbrush at home to minimize tooth pain and wear.

Bruxism

Bruxism, or teeth clenching and grinding is a common result of stress or damage to the teeth or jaw. If you clench or grind your teeth when you’re stressed or even unconsciously at night, your teeth can wear down. Over time, chronic bruxism leads to chronic headaches, tooth pain, and sensitivity. Wearing a nightguard, or a custom-made oral appliance at night or in stressful situations can address tooth pain. Nightguards also prevent further wear or damage to the tooth enamel.

Broken Teeth

Please contact us if you have a dental injury. Chips, cracks, fractures, and other breaks in the tooth enamel can expose the inside of the tooth. Deep breaks in the enamel can even expose the nerves within the tooth chamber. As a result, patients are more sensitive to temperature and pressure. Dental crowns, porcelain veneers, and tooth bonding treatment can address these problems. They cover and protect the front, top, bottom, or entire tooth. An added benefit of these treatments is that they also brighten the appearance of teeth.

Gum Disease

Gingivitis or gum inflammation can quickly lead to periodontitis or gum disease. Many patients with gum inflammation can experience gum and tooth sensitivity. Gum disease is caused by harmful bacteria that irritate the gum tissue and can spread to the tooth enamel. Over time, patients with gum disease may experience gum recession and deep gum pockets. Gum recession can expose dentin, the underlayer beneath the enamel. Bacteria that cause periodontitis can also reach the tooth. We offer deep cleaning treatments that remove plaque and tartar from the teeth and gums. Plaque is a sticky film that can cover the teeth and gums. Plaque hardens to form tartar which is difficult to remove without professional dental tools.
