Gum Disease in Adults

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontitis, is a common dental problem that affects about one out of two adults over age 30. This disease begins as a bacterial infection in the soft tissues of the gums that surround your teeth. If left untreated, the bacteria that cause gum infection can also spread to other areas of the body, and can also be a risk factor for stroke, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Fortunately, you can prevent gum disease from jeopardizing your health. Dr. Mark Sowell and his team at Aesthetic Dentistry Centre would like to help you take steps to protect your oral health and treat gum disease in their Plano, TX office.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Most of the bacteria in the mouth are harmless. Plaque forms when bacteria combine with mucus and other particles leftover in the mouth. If plaque is not removed by brushing and flossing, it hardens and becomes tartar. When the immune system tries to get rid of the tartar, it causes inflammation. Over time, gum inflammation may lead to gum recession. Pockets in the gums allow more bacteria to settle in. Smoking, poor nutrition, stress, teeth grinding, poor oral hygiene, and even hormonal changes are risk factors for developing gum disease.

Stages Of Periodontal Disease

Gum disease begins as gingivitis, also known as gum inflammation, which can be easily reversed.  However, not all cases of gingivitis become gum disease. In the early stages, the teeth are still in their sockets, but the gums are still irritated and inflamed. Removing the tartar with brushing and flossing can reverse gingivitis.  Gingivitis becomes periodontitis when bacteria reach the bone beneath the gums. Gum pockets around the teeth created by gum inflammation expose the bone and a lack of support from the tissue and the jawbone can loosen the teeth.
