Dr. Sowell may recommend sedation to ensure your comfort during your dental treatments. In many situations, patients can receive multiple procedures during one visit while being sedated.
Sedation dentistry enables a patient to undergo a dental treatment, or more than one treatment, while in a euphoric state even though they are alert and responsive.
Common forms of sedation dentistry
- Nitrous Oxide: or commonly known as laughing gas, Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask and allows you to be relaxed while remaining awake during the dental treatment. This form of sedation is extremely effective and safe. Many patients prefer this treatment because once the masked is removed, all effects disappear and you are able to return to your normal activity.
- Oral Conscious Sedation: this form is administered in a pill and allows you to feel awake during dental procedures. Oral sedation does not require needles and is less expensive than IV sedation. For minimal sedation, a patient will take a pill about an hour before treatment and will become drowsy.
- IV Sedation: administered through an IV, this type of sedation eliminates pain and anxiety during dental treatments. The benefit of IV sedation is that the chosen medication is administered into the bloodstream for an almost immediate effect and can be continually adjusted.
